Caryophyllene
Caryophyllene was one of the first cannabis-derived compounds, and still one of the few terpenes, to be shown to interact with endocannabinoid receptors directly.
Caryophyllene is one of around 20000 terpenes that Earth's flora produces, and one of about 400 produced by cannabis. Research has shown that it has the ability to bind with the CB2 receptor, which is very rare for a terpene. Recognised for its anti-inflammatory purposes, caryophyllene is often present in cannabis strains that have been cultivated to offer relief from inflammation, pain, and gastrointestinal problems.
